Developing Best Practices to Assist K-12 Students Struggling with Behavior

Highlights

  • How can we leverage evidence-based practices to assist K-12 students struggling with behavior?
  • Abt is identifying best practices using a systematic evidence review process.
  • We’ll develop accessible practice guides and intervention reports for practitioners.
The Challenge

The Institute of Education Sciences’ What Works Clearinghouse wanted a systematic review of evidence on interventions designed to improve the social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes of students in kindergarten to grade 12. Abt Global and our partners were contracted to conduct this review and to develop products  that promote easier—and broader—uptake by school administrators, teachers, and staff.

The Approach

Abt is leading the first Task Order of the What Works Clearinghouse Preschool-to-Postsecondary Evidence Synthesis Task Orders (WWC-PESTO), which focuses on assisting students struggling with behavior in grades K-12. Through this project, Abt applies the What Works Clearinghouse standards to review research on programs, practices, and interventions designed to support student behavior. Abt also convenes an expert panel comprised of researchers and practitioners to develop evidence-based recommendations based on the evidence that meets What Works Clearinghouse standards.

The Results

Abt will develop two practice guides for the What Works Clearinghouse to help inform practitioners as they look to adopt, develop, or scale up successful behavioral interventions for students in K-12 settings. Abt will also produce six intervention reports that will summarize findings of the highest-quality research on a given behavior intervention or practice.
