ATSDR Toxicological Profiles

The Challenge

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) wants to better understand the characteristics of chemicals with a range of potential health effects—including cancer, endocrine, neurological, hematological, hepatic, and renal—found on the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL).

The Approach

Abt was awarded a contract to support and partner with ATSDR in writing publicly available reports that aim to inform health professionals, private sector organizations, and the public. Abt also provided updated graphics, database quality assurance, and interactive visualizations to aid in communicating complex Tox Profile information to various stakeholders.

Abt’s chemical analyses consist of literature reviews (including systematic reviews), data extraction, dose-response modeling, and development of non-regulatory Minimal Risk Levels (MRLs) to better understand the health effects associated with chemical exposures. Abt will also implement its methods and data visualizations developed for ATSDR at full scale. The data visualization dashboard will represent health effects, minimal risk levels (MRLs), references, and citations for 184 Tox Profiles.

The Results

Abt’s work will be summarized in toxicological profiles, which will go through inter- and intra-agency review and peer review. Abt will also write summary documents known as ToxFAQs and ToxGuides to provide a short overview of each toxicological profile, and findings will be available on the ATSDR website. The Abt team created automated, reproducible graphics and data visualizations that will benefit ATSDR and public stakeholders by enhancing the clarity of graphics and adding flexibility with interactive data dashboards and graphics.
